Importance of Satellite Communication Tec…

The ability to communicate is the most important part of a plan, enabling all other pieces to come into action. Having an alternate means of communications and staff trained to use and test the hardware on a monthly basis can enhance recovery time, save lives, and minimize the financial and psychological impact on employees, families and communities.

Hurricane season has come and gone throughout the years and here we are during the season again. As a Regional Sales Manager in the Southeast with Globalstar, my phone does not stop ringing for several weeks.

Technology is not foreign to me. I have worked within the technology industry for 18 years and have had the privilege to learn about the latest and greatest firsthand from recognized brands in varied segments. However, 2017 brought an opportunity for me within the satellite communications industry. While I have enjoyed learning about the intricacies of this industry, I also bring fresh eyes and the criticism of someone who did not grow up in telecom.

So, what do I see?

  1. Satellite Communications play a part in multiple industries: business continuity, emergency management, oil and gas, IoT, healthcare, government, maritime, mining, logging, outdoor recreation and more.
  2. Every business of every size and in any industry is aware of the need for a complete emergency plan and because of this, I have met Emergency Managers & Business Continuity Managers with very specific titles in many businesses.
  3. Although as a society, we understand the importance of planning and that disasters may come in man-made or nature-driven formats, we allocate the minimum amount of budget to ensure plans are executed as they are supposed to when disaster strikes.

Hurricane season has come and gone throughout the years and here we are during the season again. As a Regional Sales Manager in the Southeast with Globalstar, my phone does not stop ringing for several weeks. Globalstar is a leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services giving people the ability to stay connected when disaster strikes. Everyone needs to have communication in order to execute their disaster recovery plans and price is no longer an issue. Availability, ability to deliver, non-jammed customer service lines and knowledge of how to use the product become the major concerns at hand.

I understand how budgets work in different industries and that priorities must be established. Unfortunately, disaster can strike at any moment. Floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tornadoes, landslides, hurricanes, terrorist attacks, technology hacks and transportation hazards are a reality. Companies should plan accordingly and ensure the teams designated to execute DR or BC plans have the necessary tools to succeed.

The ability to communicate is the most important part of a plan, enabling all other pieces to come into action. Having an alternate means of communications and staff trained to use and test the hardware on a monthly basis can enhance recovery time, save lives, and minimize the financial and psychological impact on employees, families and communities.

I am very proud to be an employee of Globalstar and to see how our products and services have been a blessing to so many victims of the latest hurricanes. The natural disasters of 2017 and 2018 gave me an opportunity to be constructively critical of the industry and I hope everyone learned lessons from this period.
