Netflix Has Renewed ‘Space Force’ for Season 2 as Questions Mount About the Show’s Future

In May 2020, Netflix released the highly anticipated comedy series Space Force, created by The Office‘s Greg Daniels and Steve Carell, and inspired by President Trump’s Space Force initiative. The show follows the chaos that ensues when General Mark R. Naird (Steve) uproots his life and moves to Colorado to run the U.S. Armed Forces’ newest branch.

Despite receiving varying reviews from TV critics, the streaming giant gave the show the green light for a second season. In attempt to drive down the show’s budget, the show will move its filming location from Los Angeles to Vancouver, per The Hollywood Reporter. It is just one of the many changes that are in store when season 2 of Space Force hits Netflix sometime next year.

Here’s what to know about Space Force season 2:

When is the Space Force season 2 release date on Netflix?

While all 10 episodes of Space Force season 1 launched on the streaming service on May 29, 2020, it’s not yet clear if season 2 will be ready by next spring, especially given the unpredictability of the coronavirus pandemic. At the moment, Netflix has not shared a set premiere date. Of course, we will be sure to update this post quickly once we know more.

Who will be in the Space Force season 2 cast?

So far, no casting changes have been announced. For the time being, we can assume that the following actors will reprise their roles for season 2:

  • Steve Carell as General Mark R. Naird
  • John Malkovich as Dr. Adrian Mallory
  • Ben Schwartz as F. Tony Scarapiducci
  • Diana Silvers as Erin Naird
  • Tawny Newsome as Angela Ali
  • Jimmy O. Yang as Dr. Chan Kaifang
  • Alex Sparrow as Yuri Telatovich
  • Don Lake as Brad Gregory
  • Noah Emmerich as General Kick Grabaston
  • Jessica St. Clair as Kelly King
  • Lisa Kudrow as Maggie Naird

Sadly, actor Fred Willard, who played Mark’s father, Fred Naird, in season 1 of Space Force, died at the age of 86 just before the show made its debut on Netflix.

What will change in season 2 of Space Force?

Specifics about what General Naird and his team will (or will not) accomplish in season 2 remain up in the air. That said, the show will almost certainly have to address the changing political climate, given that President-elect Joe Biden will be sworn into office on January 20.

As writers grapple with writing around a new administration in 2021 (and what that could mean for the Space Force‘s future), Parks and Recreation screenwriter Norm Hiscock is coming aboard as part of a “creative revamp.” THR sources confirm that Norm is being brought on in hopes that, like The Office, Space Force will grow and better connect with viewers in season 2 and beyond. What’s more, actor Jimmy O. Yang is joining the show’s writing team for season 2.

How can I watch or stream Space Force season 2?

Like season 1, the second installment of Space Force will be available to stream exclusively on Netflix. While the streaming service doesn’t currently offer a free trial period for new users, you have the option of subscribing to one of three different plans, with the first one starting at $8.99 per month.

Netflix is compatible with any internet-connected device that offers the app, including smart TVs, game consoles, streaming media players, set-top boxes, smartphones, and tablets.
